Dear Arts and Education Advocate,
I want to tell you about the Dallas Girls Chorus. What you need to hear above all else is, while we’re teaching these girls how to sing, we’re really teaching them how to use their voice.
We believe in a new hybrid methodology fusing traditional choral models and the power of music, with the importance of Social/Emotional Learning. And, while school focuses on student output through testing, our output will be gauged by the character they present to the world. We believe this will become a new framework for choirs at a national level.
I want to allay any preconceived notion of children’s choirs. We endeavor to honor the strength and power of these girls from the moment they arrive, over the preciousness so often associated with youth choirs. We want to cultivate internal respect for themselves, for the leadership in front of them, and for one another. We balance focus and fun in a supportive environment that’s always loving. Isn’t that how any of us truly grows?
We’re a process-focused organization. Yes, our concerts will be of the highest level, with high-caliber artistry and immense attention to detail. And also, we care about how we’re teaching and training our singers in rehearsal. In our weekend sessions with strong leaders in the community, we promote life skills not able to be taught elsewhere. As we honor mind, body, and breath connection, we engage in self-awareness practices throughout rehearsals, giving them immediate tools to use in the real world when they leave rehearsal. While they learn theory, they’ll be learning how to communicate their emotions effectively, all the while developing lasting relationships that remain with them wherever they go in this life.
And yes, there’s a tremendous gift offered to an all-girls organization. We can foster the emotional learning and maturity that inherently develops quicker in girls. We allow them a safe space bonding them together, revitalizing the importance of the female voice in this world. They will embrace the privilege offered them in our culture to use their voice and to become advocates for such empowerment to areas of the world where that’s not the case. As they will embrace the opportunities given to them in this environment, they will internally awaken to their worth, value, and deserving presence in this world.
